People often ask me “what’s your favorite beer?” or “if you had to recommend a [insert style here], what would it be?”
So instead of forcing you to sift through all my beer reviews (which you can if you have time), I thought I’d condense the best of the best in one nice simple list. Ordered from top to bottom based on level of mind-blowingness. This will be updated periodically as new masterpieces cross my palate and cause me to rethink my beer worldview:
1. Stone Old Guardian (Barleywine)
2. Surly Darkness (Imperial Stout)
3. Three Floyds Dark Lord (Imperial Stout)
4. Russian River Pliny the Elder (Double IPA)
5. Westvleteren 12 (Trappist Quadrupel)
6. Westmalle Tripel (Trappist Tripel)
2. Surly Darkness (Imperial Stout)
3. Three Floyds Dark Lord (Imperial Stout)
4. Russian River Pliny the Elder (Double IPA)
5. Westvleteren 12 (Trappist Quadrupel)
6. Westmalle Tripel (Trappist Tripel)
7. Boulevard Smokestack Series: Sixth Glass (Belgian Quadrupel)
8. Founders Kentucky Breakfast Stout (Imperial Stout)
9. Dogfish Head 90 Minute (Double IPA)
10. Schneider & Sohn Aventinus (Doppelbock)
11. Weihenstephaner (Hefeweizen)
12. Houblon Chouffe Dobbelen IPA Tripel (Double IPA/Tripel)
13. Surly 16 Grit (Double IPA – now known as Abrasive Ale)
14. Barley John’s Dark Knight (Baltic Porter)
15. Alesmith Yulesmith (Double IPA)

Damn, I think we have the same tastes! I think I would have added almost every beer you have. I may leave out the Furious and put in the Big Boat Oatmeal Stout from The Brewhouse in Duluth. Great blog!!!!

Where were you able to get your hands on Westvleteren 12? That is one I will have to search out in my lifetime, but hear it is extremely difficult…

I wrote about it earlier this year, it really is a phenomenal beer. Worth every effort to get it.

You have 120 and 60 minute rated over 90 minute? Had you consumed a case of Dark Lord when you came up with this list?

Yeah, I need to reorganize the list. When I first tried DFH 90 it didn’t do much for me, but my opinion has changed. It is the best of the three.
