Very in-depth profile on Sam Calagione of Dogfish Head in the recent food issue of The New Yorker. This guy is nothing but pure inspiration for me. Favorite set of quotes from the story:
“To give you some context for why [Budweiser American Ale] is so distasteful to me,” Calagione said. “At the same time that they’re making this relatively hoppy wanna-be craft beer that exists only to confuse the consumer—so that they can be culture vultures—they are running ads that say that the darker a beer is the more impurities it has. It’s beer racism.” … “Look,” he told me later. “I’m not afraid to pay compliments where compliments are due. Anheuser-Busch’s quality—if quality is consistency—is second to none. But I’m frustrated that that one beer has been hammered down people’s throats. I mean, banana cream pie may be your favorite fucking food. But if you ate banana cream pie every day you would hate it, too.”

Ah yeah. Printed this out yesterday but I have not a chance to read it yet.

Awesome article. Thanks for finding it!
Sam is a stud. I’m so glad you finally are getting to try DFH beers.

I keep waiting for the right time to try Midas Touch and Theobroma…it’s almost like you have to be in the right mindset.

I still have my one and only bottles of Theo and Darkness and I too am saving them for the right time.
Decided I will uncork Theo for Thanksgiving. Seems like solid dessert beer with those cocoa nibs.
Darkness is still TBD, perhaps this Sunday.
The right time for Midas Touch is when no one else is around. So damn weird.

I only have one bottle of Darkness left. Have a feeling it’ll be hanging around for a while.

I held onto my final bottle of Cuvee de Castleton for months.

Midas and Theo aren’t that great but they are very experimental and that’s what I love about them. I’m having issues writing a Theo review. It’s different and so much is going on in it that it’s hard for me to rate it. So I bought another bottle and I’m going to just sit there and write the review. Yes it’s dorky but it’s the only way I’ll get it close to what I think it deserves (listen to me, like my review matters haha)

Hey Aaron,
Would you be able to get me a growler of this. I’ll pay for everything of course

Nanny state-ism strikes again!
November 18, 2008 at 3:34 pm
Absolutely, if I can I will. Only issue is that I don’t currently possess a growler from Surly, and under state law they can’t fill a growler from another brewery. So I’d have to pick up a growler now (which may be tough since they’re diminishing their existing stock) and refill it the last week of December. I’ll keep you posted.

Thanks man!

[...] I’m well aware that Sam has taken up that same mantle to some degree and made his own public remarks of disdain about BMC, I’m not picking on Greg. [...]
