Call me crazy, but Dogfish Head’s 90 Minute IPA is just not as good as the 60 Minute version. Don’t get me
wrong…it’s good. But I think it’s kind of like comparing pretty good pizza and really good pizza. The difference is marginal at best. It’s still good pizza, and you’re not gonna complain about it either way.
As I sampled this one, it was encouraging for me as a homebrewer that the 90 Minute really reminded me of a Double IPA I brewed last year. It smells and tastes like they’re still using the same hop profile as their 60 (Warrior, Amarillo, and probably Centennial or Columbus), and on the bottle they describe their process as a “continuous” hop infusion during the boil. Does that mean they add a bunch of hops up front, and let it boil out? Or do they slowly add hops throughout the entire process? I’m not exactly sure.
But after reading my good friend Wikipedia, they apparently don’t stop there. Instead of simply dry hopping, they pass the beer through a large plastic tube filled with raw Cascade hops. The alcohol in the beer lifts oils off the raw hops and imparts even more hop flavor, making one hell of a deliciously bitter ale. Grapefruit and citrus dominate the aroma, the hallmark of a good DIPA (or Imperial IPA, as this one is billed…is there a difference?).
The taste is also pretty intense, with sweet, honey-like malt that barely masks the 9% ABV on this one. After you take a nice pull and set the glass down, for a split second you get a hint of the 60 Minute’s woody qualities, but it dissipates quickly. This is certainly one of the better DIPA’s I’ve enjoyed, but in my book doesn’t quite edge out others I’ve had like Bell’s Hop Slam.

90 Minute destroys 60 minute in my opinion but it’s why beer is awesome, some people like some stuff better than others. I love this stuff and it really got me into bigger beers.

Yeah, I too think 90 Minute destroys 60 Minute (though I give 60 Minute a solid A) and that 120 destroys 90, but a lot of people do agree with The Captain here.
Then again, I’m a shameless homer for potently-high ABVs. If there was a 240 minute I’d be first in line to try it.

Can you get Avery Maharaja in Minnesota? One of my favorite widely-accessible DIPAs.

Oh and yeah I agree on Hop Slam. That is just a fantastic DIPA. 90 is close but Hop Slam might be perfect.

Maharaja is good too like Aaron said but its more of a punch you in the face DIPA. 90 minute just tastes like liquid gold to me. You ready to some trades so I can get some Surly!

I’ve heard good things about HopSlam but it’s never made it to NYC. Bell’s distribution is weak here.

Bell’s is one of the best breweries in the US. If you want Bells I shall get you Bell’s! My beer place here is in love with Bell’s. It’s his favorite brewery. He even has a damn Bell’s flag hanging from the ceiling. I’ll get you some hop slam when it comes out next year. Whenever I see it, I’m buying a case. It’s seriously tasty.

Yeah, I was expecting to be completely bowled over with the 90 since the 60 was so awesome. Maybe I got an off bottle or something. It is good, though. I can’t find Hop Slam anywhere around here any longer…I think they only brew in Jan-Feb.
Never even heard of Avery.
However, interestingly enough, I had Left Hand Sawtooth last night, and it tastes exactly like Fat Tire to me. Like Left Hand is New Belgium’s pen name or something.
